Djinn's Home
I have travelled to many places around the world with my mates, many times we preferred to explore the scary or haunted places or out online vlog. It was nothing fancy like the other channels, hardly got any views to show but we did it non the less. Coming to Malindi was a spur of the moment as we had planned to go to Vietnam but found a package deal we could not resist. Africa was a place we least travelled because there were no mentions of haunted locations and now I know why. I am writing this so that whoever reads this does not make the same mistake.
We got to
our hotel at the beach and man the place was amazing. The beach, though not as
clean as other places, was alive with people and activities like tours and wind
surfing. My friend (whom I will call for a good reason) A was having the time
of his life trying everything and because it was cheaper than we had expected
we did it all. B was busy talking to the hotel staff about the usual sights and
place to visit until he met an old staffer who told him about a site nearby
that was supposed to be a kind of house but is not visited for some reason.
We
regrouped and B spoke about the place and we decided to visit and do our usual
vlog. For the first few days we enjoyed the hotel and did a couple of tours to
really see the place after which we planned to go to that place. Asking around
again we never really got the info we needed so we decided to walk there and
see for ourselves.
It was like
a 30 minutes’ walk away from the hotel and what we got were a pile of stones
and an old floor plan. We were disappointed but decided to camp out and see
what happens as it was like 6 and growing dark. There were a few people who
passed us by and gave no notice to us as we just walked about looking at the
place. An old lady spoke to us in Swahili and since we did not know that
dialect we kept repeating ‘Only English’ and she took the hint and left. Later
as the darkness crept in she returned with a younger man who may be her son and
he told us to leave as the place is not safe at night. B told him that we were
researching the place and its history, the man looked at us and spoke to his
mother who replied and he translated.
“You should
not be here, this place is home to the Djinn. They roam here looking for people
to poses.” I looked at them and at A, he looked at me and then shrugged.
“Djinn, you mean Genies?”
The man
looked at me and then spoke to his mother, they looked at us and quickly left.
It was dark by this time and we used the flashlights we had to move about. The
wind from the sea made it difficult to sit out in the open so we took cover
behind some trees. As we settled B took out the camera we carried and turned it
on and used the night mode to look around, there was nothing but the swaying
coconut trees and bushes. There were no nearby lights which struck me as odd. I
wanted to know more about the history of this place but could not find anyone
to tell us and also it was far from everywhere. Though it took us 30 mins to
walk here about 10 mins form the site there was nothing and no one to haggle
with us.
As time
progressed the night we noticed that there was no other sound other than the
swaying trees, wind and the ocean. I grew more agitated at this and mentioned
it to B, he was busy looking through the scree at something while A sat staring
at some point in the site. I put my hand on A’s shoulder and he jerked ‘What
the hell man?”
“sorry,
what the heck are you looking at there” A looked at the same spot and said,
“there is something there moving oddly and I cannot for the life of me figure
it out. Its like a person moving around but staying still at the same moment,
know what I mean” I looked at the same place and saw like a dark shadow there,
I motioned B to use his camera to see what it was. He pointed it in that
direction and almost jumped “Th…. There’s someone there, well I think a
someone.”
Just then
over everything went silent and we heard the footsteps. A something or someone
was making their way to our place and we all stood up ready to run. The figure
emerged and it looked like the women we see in town dressed head to toe in
black except the eyes that were not covered. I started to step back and so did
B. A spoke out “Who are you and what are you doing here?”
Nothing,
still the figure moved forward. I was getting scared and could tell B was also.
A took a step forward and shone the light directly at the figure, it was
definitely a woman. She stopped and looked at us, “You should not have come
here white people, this is not your home.”
I told B we
should leave now, and he agreed, I put my hand again on A’s shoulder and he
shook it off and moved forward. “Look we are here to investigate this place, do
you know anything about it?”
The woman
laughed at A telling him that this is her home and we were not allowed to be
here. B tapped me on my should and pointed at here feet, I looked and almost
fell. The dress or something went all the way down to just above the ankles,
what really froze my blood was that the feet were pointed the other direction.
I grabbed A and tried to run for it.
A did not
understand why I was doing this until I pointed the feet and all of a sudden a
scream was heard coming from out right and we froze. The woman had disappeared
and we were frozen on our tracks. All round us the wind started howling along
with the wind. I covered my ears and tried to move towards where we came from
and B followed. A was walking towards where the woman was last seen. I grabbed
him again this time yanking him to follow. We ran and did not stop till we
reached the hotel. I was half dragging and pulling A from there and he kept
saying we should go back. At the hotel the guard recognized us and let us in.
He asked us where we came from and B told him in between breaths.
The guard
almost dropped his staff, “no boss, that place is cursed. You should not have
gone there. The Djinn would have eaten you.” He was looked at us like we were
infected or something and kept his distance. We made our way to our rooms and
tried to was off the night, A was almost numb to all this. I asked him what was
wrong and he kept repeating “she promised to tell me, I should have stayed.”
Looking back I should have stayed in this room because the in the morning when
we knocked on his door he did not respond. Worried I asked the staff to open
the door for us telling them that my friend had one too many last night and we
wanted to make sure he was ok.
Inside the
room the sight that greeted us still haunts me today. There A lay on his bed
naked with his eyes gouged out. There was blood all the way to the ceiling of
the room, his face looked calm like as if he knew what was happening and did
not care. It was then I heard a whisper in my ear “He saw me and now you will
too.”
