I found the lake of souls
I was trekking through the sanctuary like always but that day things were different; I found myself on path I had never been before. It was a clear day but as things progressed, I ended up in a fog bank and found myself lost and nothing made sense. I tried to backtrack but there was no marker I could follow to the original path. I used the compass to figure out the right direction to follow but it kept shifting like the world beneath me was turning. Finally I just followed the path I was on to see where it headed, there were trees and brush all around but the fog was obscuring much of it.
After, what felt like, 3 hours of walking I could hear the sound of water lapping on a shore, and this gave me the energy to push forward. The closer I got the further it seemed, I stopped to listen every so often to make sure I was on the right path. I finally reached the shore of stones and it wasn’t what I was expecting. The stones on the shore were not what they seemed to be, they were rough and did not have the sheen I was familiar with. I picked a few and tried to examine what kind of stone they were but I was blank. Most looked like grey rocks that had the surface of porous corral and I they had that pinkish tinge that made it even more confusing. I walked to the water and that made things even more confusing, the water was thicker and had a red hue to it. The fog did not make it easy to see further than 6 feet now, so I had no clue where I was.
I walked on the shore till I saw some lights further away cutting through the fog and I ran to them in hopes they could be some sort of cabin or camp. Getting close I could it was a pier with a line of lanterns, the lanterns were being held by people. Walking closer I could see they were all looking at one direction, at the lake or river. I tried to call to them but there was no answer. I got on to the pier and shook the nearest person and she did not answer just merely stared ahead like I did not exist. I walked to the front of the line to see what they were looking at but found only open water. After a few minutes I hear the sound of a boat approaching, the rhythmical splashing of oars on water coming closer.
I waited for the boat to get close so I could ask for directions or help to get out of here, the closer the sound came I could make out a dark shadow. A large boat finally came into view and it brought shivers down my spine, it was like looking at a boat made from driftwood or something. As it got closer, I finally could see what it was really made from, the wood was bone. Human bones were used to make this boat, and I could make out skulls at the handrails and other types of bones on the hull. I wanted to run but my body was frozen on the spot, I saw the sailor and it was a large person wearing a full cloak that covered the head. All I could think now was that this was death and I ended up in its world.
The boat docked on to the pier and one by one the people standing boarded the boat and I remained, the figure I thought of as death raised its head towards me. “You are not part of this herd child, turn back.” I tried to move by still my body did not want to move, the fear that was coursing through my veins was stopping me. “That fear you feel is mortal fear, you have not the payment for this journey. Leave now or you will never see the sun again.”
I tried to ask where I was but my mouth would not move, “you are at the cross roads of souls, few living have been here and fewer I allowed to leave. You found this place by chance or folly I do not know, so I tell you to leave. There is no place for you’re here yet, return when you debts have been paid and you life lived to its conclusion.”
I turned and ran, I did not think of anything but running. I ran till my legs gave out and I fell to the ground. I did not know where I was but did not care and fell asleep on the ground. I woke later to find that I was on the trek I had started on. There were some people kneeling over me and asking if I was ok, but I just stared up at them no knowing what to say. I had been considered for lost 6 days and these people were part of a group set out to look for me. All I know is that I stumbled upon the lake of souls.
